EFF Slams Court For Granting Bail To Alleged Crime Boss Katiso ‘KT’ Molefe

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have criticised the Johannesburg High Court’s decision to release controversial businessman Katiso “KT” Molefe on bail, calling it a grave error that could endanger witnesses and law enforcement officers.

Molefe, reportedly one of KwaZulu-Natal’s underworld kingpins, was granted bail of R400,000 this week despite facing multiple serious charges. He has been previously associated with another alleged crime figure, Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, who remains in custody for various offences.

EFF spokesperson Sinawo Thambo expressed outrage at the ruling, saying it disregarded the extensive evidence presented against Molefe.

“Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo of Crime Intelligence has testified before the Madlanga Judicial Commission that Molefe, along with businessman Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala, lead a cartel known to be part of the ‘Big Five’ and involved in contract killings, drug trafficking, cross-border hijackings, tender fraud, and extortion,” Thambo said.

“Yet, despite such serious allegations, and despite the state’s evidence linking him to multiple homicides, the courts have chosen to release him back into society,” he added.

Molefe Accused of Masterminding DJ Sumbody’s Murder

Molefe is facing a series of grave criminal charges, including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Authorities have accused him of orchestrating the 2022 murders of popular music producer and nightclub owner DJ Sumbody, along with his bodyguards Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza.

Police investigations revealed that firearms seized from Molefe’s operations have been forensically linked to at least 18 other criminal cases, including attempted murders and assassinations. He was arrested in July 2025 by the SAPS Political Killings Task Team.

Earlier this year, Molefe was also granted bail in connection with the murder of Armand Swart after the Deputy Judge President of the Pretoria High Court approved his release.

Thambo warned that Molefe’s freedom could have dire consequences. “This undermines every principle of justice and endangers the lives of witnesses, whistleblowers, and police officers working on these cases,” he said.

EFF Demands Urgent Protection for Witnesses

In response, the EFF has called on the state to act immediately to safeguard all witnesses and whistleblowers linked to Molefe’s cases.

“The EFF demands that all witnesses and whistleblowers connected to Molefe’s cases be placed under immediate state protection. Their lives are at grave risk while a man accused of leading one of South Africa’s most dangerous syndicates walks free,” Thambo stated.

He further cautioned that history has shown how witnesses in politically or criminally sensitive cases often face intimidation or assassination when left unprotected.

Molefe has also been linked to controversial politician Kenny Kunene, who was questioned by authorities after being found at Molefe’s Sandton residence. Reports suggest that Kunene has allegedly visited Molefe’s house on multiple occasions.
