Over the weekend, an EFF candidate running in the Msunduzi Municipality for the 2021 elections was assassinated. Thulani Shangase, a Pietermaritzburg resident, was confirmed dead on Monday morning.
The candidate for public office is the latest victim of political violence in KZN. The incident occurred when Shangase left a meeting to answer his phone, according to security firm RTC South Africa: “On Sunday, EFF candidate Thulani Shangase was shot dead after briefly leaving a meeting to take a phone call in Pietermaritzburg.”
The cold-blooded killing was first reported on Sunday night, but it wasn’t until today that confirmation of the EFF candidate’s death was made official. It is believed that this was a politically motivated assassination in Caluza, and Ward 20 in Pietermaritzburg has now lost a genuine candidate for councillor.
Police quickly opened a murder investigation and hope to resolve this tragic incident soon. Thulani Shangase was meeting with other party officials when he was killed by a hail of bullets. So far, no arrests have been made.
