Education Activist Condemns Operation Dudula’s Plan To Block Foreign Learners From Schools

Education activist Hendrick Makaneta has strongly criticised Operation Dudula for its plans to visit schools and prevent undocumented foreign pupils from completing their final examinations.

His comments follow the organisation’s announcement that it intends to appeal a recent court interdict barring its members from blocking foreign nationals’ access to public schools and healthcare facilities.

Makaneta condemned the group’s actions, warning that such conduct is both unlawful and unethical, and poses a grave risk to the safety and dignity of children.

“Schools are centres of learning which should be respected by everyone,” said Makaneta.

He further expressed concern that these threats could disrupt the crucial exam period for learners across South Africa.

“At a time when learners across the country are sitting for their final examinations, the threats by Dudula members create unnecessary anxiety at a crucial period in children’s education.

“Every learner has the right to education as enshrined in Section 29 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996,” he added.

Court Upholds Right to Education for Undocumented Learners

Earlier this week, the Johannesburg High Court ruled against Operation Dudula, prohibiting the group from demanding identification from individuals at hospitals, clinics, and schools.

Operation Dudula has maintained that undocumented foreign nationals strain South Africa’s public services, including the healthcare and education sectors.

However, Makaneta reminded the group of a previous Makhanda High Court ruling, which upheld the constitutional right of undocumented children to access education.

“Members of Operation Dudula should be reminded that the Makhanda High Court has already made a ruling which states that undocumented children should receive education in line with the Constitution, which is the supreme law of the country,” said Makaneta.

He described Dudula’s planned school visits as “ill-advised and unlawful.”

Call for Unity to Protect Children’s Rights

Makaneta urged communities and local leaders to stand together in defending the rights of all children to learn in a safe and peaceful environment.

“We also urge community leaders and citizens to stand together in protecting the right of every child to learn in peace.

“Operation Dudula must immediately withdraw its planned visits and respect the rule of law. All that the children need is a chance to finish their exams,” he said.
