Eastern Cape Teacher Arrested For Human Trafficking And Prostitution Ring

A 52-year-old Eastern Cape teacher has been arrested for her alleged involvement in a human trafficking and prostitution operation targeting young women from the former Transkei region.

Provincial Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana confirmed that the woman, who teaches at a school in East London, was arrested at her workplace on Wednesday.

Human Trafficking Network Targeted Transkei Victims

Mhlakuvana said investigations, which began in September 2023, revealed that the suspect had been recruiting young women from Qumbu, Mthatha, and Ngqeleni under false pretences before coercing them into prostitution.

“The victims were allegedly transported from different areas to East London, where they were ostensibly housed at the suspect’s residence and coerced into prostitution,” said Mhlakuvana.

Preliminary findings indicated that the victims were forced to engage in sexual activities with various clients, from whom they received payments that were ultimately taken by the teacher.

“The suspect supposedly profited from these illegal activities by charging accommodation fees ranging between R250 and R300 per night, depending on the room. It is further alleged that she personally collected the proceeds or directed the victims to transfer the funds through her bank account,” Mhlakuvana added.

Teacher Faces Multiple Criminal Charges

The teacher is facing charges of human trafficking, sexual exploitation, and operating an illegal brothel. She appeared before the East London Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 16 October 2025.

Meanwhile, Provincial Hawks Head Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya commended the investigation team for their persistence, vowing that the Hawks would continue to dismantle organised criminal networks that exploit vulnerable individuals.

“This arrest demonstrates our unwavering commitment to protecting women and children from exploitation and ensuring that those who prey on the vulnerable are brought to justice,” said Ngwenya.
