Eastern Cape School Shooting: Third Teacher Dies After Ntabankulu Primary Attack

A teacher who was critically injured during a shooting at Ntabankulu Primary School in the Eastern Cape has died in hospital, raising the death toll to three.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed the death on Thursday, saying the educator passed away while being transported for further medical care.
Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said the teacher died after suffering complications during the ambulance transfer to Mthatha Hospital.
Teacher Dies After Succumbing to Gunshot Injuries
“She sadly succumbed to her injuries last night while being transported by ambulance to Mthatha Hospital. The ambulance personnel diverted to Madzikane Hospital after she experienced medical complications, where she was declared deceased by the attending doctor,” said Gantana.
Police said the shooting took place at around 12:00 when a former teacher allegedly gained access to the school premises by cutting through the perimeter fence.
“This development means all three educators shot in the attack have now been declared deceased. All victims were female educators,” Gantana added.

Authorities said the names of the deceased will be released once all next-of-kin have been formally notified.

The suspect, a former teacher at the school, was declared dead at the scene. Police confirmed he had been dismissed in 2023 following sexual assault charges and was out on bail at the time of the incident.

Gantana said SAPS would be investigating three counts of murder, along with one inquest docket.
“SAPS extends its most heartfelt and sincere condolences to the families, friends, colleagues, and the entire school community devastated by this profound loss,” Gantana said.
