Eastern Cape Crash Kills Four Family Members, Including Two Children

A devastating road accident in the Eastern Cape has claimed four lives believed to be members of the same family. The crash occurred on the N2 between Amalinda and Hemingways Mall, near East London, at around 5:30 pm.

Eastern Cape transport department spokesperson Unathi Binqose confirmed that the victims were travelling from Qonce towards East London when tragedy struck.

“A Honda they were driving in lost control and veered off the road, crossed the grass island and collided with an oncoming Toyota Starlet,” Binqose explained. “All 4 occupants of the Honda, two adults – a male and a female, along with two children, died on the scene.”

The driver of the Toyota Starlet sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital. Authorities have since opened a case of culpable homicide for investigation.

Transport MEC Expresses Shock and Condolences

Binqose described the incident as one of the worst road tragedies the province has seen in recent years.

“This is a terrible, terrible accident, the kind that we have not reported in the Eastern Cape in a long, long time,” he said.

Eastern Cape MEC for Transport, Xolile Nqatha, has expressed deep shock and extended heartfelt condolences to the grieving families.

“It is not clear whether they are members of the same family, but it appears to be a mother, father and two children,” Binqose added.

This tragedy follows another deadly crash just last week, when twelve people lost their lives in Limpopo. The victims, including a child aged between seven and ten, were killed in a horrific accident on the R81 at Ga-Sekgopo near Mooketsi.

According to preliminary reports, a truck allegedly failed to brake and rammed into a minibus taxi carrying congregants returning from a church service, crushing it between two trucks.
