E-Hailing Driver Kills Armed Hijacker, Injures Another In Strandfontein Shootout

New Year’s Day took a dramatic turn in Strandfontein, Cape Town when an alleged hijacking attempt by two e-hailing passengers resulted in one fatality and a second suspect wounded. The incident occurred in Spitz Way, where the armed duo met fierce resistance from their intended victim.

Pastor Oscar Bougardt, a local resident, described hearing gunshots around 9 a.m. and rushing to the scene. He found the driver of a silver VW Polo explaining the event to police.

Bougardt said: “The suspects had booked a trip, and when they arrived in Strandfontein, they held the driver at gunpoint. In self-defence, he shot them. One suspect died at the scene, while the other, shot in the leg, fled but collapsed in a nearby street.”

Bizarre Theft Attempt After Hijacking Incident

Adding a layer of complexity, two local opportunists reportedly attempted to rob the deceased suspect, stealing his firearm. However, they were quickly apprehended, and the weapon—a fake imitation gun—was recovered by police.

Sergeant Wesley Twigg, police spokesperson, confirmed investigations are ongoing, with cases of murder, attempted murder, carjacking, and attempted robbery opened.

“Strandfontein detectives are investigating the circumstances that led to the incident. No arrests have been made yet,” said Twigg.

Community Concerns

Community Police Forum chairperson Sandy Schuter urged ride-hailing companies like Uber and Bolt to enhance safety measures for drivers.

“Drivers face considerable risks, particularly with the inability to pre-screen customers. Collaboration with authorities is crucial to developing effective solutions,” said Schuter.

The incident underscores the dangers faced by e-hailing drivers and the importance of addressing vulnerabilities in the system.
