Durban Woman Escapes Alleged Kidnapping By Bolt Driver

A 29-year-old woman narrowly escaped an alleged kidnapping by a Bolt driver on Tuesday, September 2, 2025. She and her family reported the incident to the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) headquarters shortly after the ordeal.

The woman, who resides in eThekwini, said she had booked a ride via the Bolt app to Food Lovers Market in Cornubia at 13:50. A male driver in a white Toyota Corolla, believed to be a foreign national, picked her up minutes later.

The woman grew suspicious when the driver passed the Cornubia off-ramp on the R102 in Mt Edgecombe. Despite pointing out the correct direction, the driver insisted he would turn around but instead diverted towards Umhlanga, eventually heading for the N2 freeway.

“When I realised he was going further away from my destination, I became hysterical,” she told investigators.

According to her statement, attempts to open the door failed as the child lock was activated. The driver allegedly became aggressive while speeding away.

Brave Escape and Ongoing Investigation

In desperation, the woman called her mother, pleading for help and urging her to alert RUSA. Moments later, the driver stopped on the N2 freeway and triggered a mechanism that opened the back door. Seizing the chance, she fled and sought safety inside a nearby tile shop.

RUSA officers later traced the vehicle and discovered it was registered to a foreign national in Kimberley, Northern Cape. The registration details are being withheld while investigations continue.
