Durban Teen Daniel Hill Remembered As Tributes Pour In From Schools And Family ‘You Left Us So Suddenly’

Tributes have been flooding in for Westville Boys’ High School pupil Daniel Hill following his death after a short illness, leaving the Durban community in deep mourning.
Daniel passed away on January 17 after contracting flu. His family, friends and the schools that shaped his young life are still in disbelive about his death.
His former primary school, Deutsche Schule Durban, was among the first to honour him, describing the teenager as a gentle, playful presence who left a lasting impression on those around him.

In its tribute, Deutsche Schule Durban highlighted Daniel’s enthusiasm for sport and his natural athletic ability.
“A superb athlete, Daniel excelled in sport and was especially gifted as a swimmer.”
The school said he would be remembered for “his warmth, his energy, and the positive impact he had on everyone around him”.
Teachers and pupils recalled not only his academic journey, but the kindness he showed to others, particularly younger learners. During breaks, Daniel was often seen running across the playground, laughing as he played tag with smaller children who were instinctively drawn to his gentle nature.
‘You left us so suddenly’ — a father’s grief
Daniel’s father, Clinton Hill, shared an emotional tribute on social media as the family struggled to come to terms with their loss. “Fly with the angels, my boy,” he wrote.
He described the overwhelming shock of losing his son so unexpectedly.
“You left us so suddenly, and we are numb and lost for words. I walked into the kitchen this morning and wanted to call you to pack away the clean dishes like you always did,” he said.
“Lulu keeps looking for you. I will never get over this and will keep you alive in our home forever.”

Speaking further about his grief, Hill said the pain remains unbearable. “Taken away so quickly and so young. To think I will never see my boy again absolutely breaks me.
“He has touched so many hearts in his 14 years of living. We are going to miss him so much and cannot even think about life without him.”
Westville Boys’ High School community unites in remembrance
Westville Boys’ High School also shared a heartfelt message following Daniel’s passing.
“We received the devastating news of the loss of one of our Griffins. Daniels’ passing has touched our school community deeply, and our hearts are heavy with sorrow.
“We extend our sincerest condolences to his family, friends, classmates, and everyone whose life he touched. May his memory be a blessing, and may those who are grieving find comfort, strength, and support during this incredibly difficult time,” the school said.
In a show of solidarity, the school’s sports teams observed a moment of silence in Daniel’s honour, joined by opposition schools. The gesture deeply moved his father.
