Durban Nanny Arrested After Allegedly Stealing 9-Month-Old Baby

A 35-year-old nanny is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 29 September 2025, after she was arrested in Empangeni for allegedly stealing a child in Durban.

Mother Returns to Find Baby Missing

According to police, the mother of a 9-month-old boy returned home on Saturday afternoon, 27 September, to find both her child and the nanny missing.

She immediately contacted the nanny, who claimed to be in Empangeni but failed to give a reasonable explanation for taking the baby without permission.

Further communication suggested the mother should travel alone to Empangeni to fetch her child, raising suspicions and prompting the mother to report the incident to Durban Central Police Station.

Police Operation Leads to Nanny’s Arrest

A coordinated police operation was launched in the early hours of Sunday morning, 28 September.
Officers tracked the suspect to Empangeni, where she was arrested, and the baby was found unharmed.

The child was taken for a precautionary medical examination and has since been reunited with the mother.

Shocking Motive Revealed

Investigators discovered that the suspect had told her boyfriend that the child was theirs, allegedly convincing him to give her R2,500 per month to care for the baby.

The woman remains in custody and will face charges of child theft when she appears in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
