Mpanza, accompanied by two accomplices, had planned to rob someone to sell the stolen items. Spotting Ward as she entered her car in the parking lot, the pair seized the opportunity.
One accomplice pointed a gun at Ward, while Mpanza grabbed her handbag and necklace. Despite the alarming situation, Ward didn’t hesitate to chase the thief. Driving through the boom gate, she hit Mpanza just outside the shopping centre, causing him to drop the stolen bag, which was subsequently returned to Ward.
Mpanza admitted that his actions were unlawful and intentional. During sentencing, the court considered his young age and his guilty plea, deviating from the minimum 15-year sentence.
Prosecutor Vishalan Naidoo submitted a victim impact statement, revealing Ward’s increased anxiety and fearfulness post-incident. National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara expressed hope that the sentence would deter other potential offenders.
Ward’s determination to recover her belongings resonated strongly on social media, where she was praised for her bravery. In an emotional statement, Ward shared the profound impact of the incident on her life, highlighting how it had drastically altered her sense of security and freedom.
Despite possessing only a few rands and essential documents in her bag, her pursuit was driven by her attachment to her personal items.
