Durban Fire Displaces 156 Residents, Destroys 92 Shacks In Informal Settlement

A devastating fire tore through an informal settlement in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), leaving 156 people—127 adults and 29 children—without shelter.

At least 92 shacks were destroyed in the blaze, according to the provincial Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA).

Three people sustained minor burn injuries and have received medical attention. Authorities confirmed that no fatalities were reported.

Emergency Humanitarian Aid Mobilised for Durban Fire Victims

KZN COGTA spokesperson Senzelwa Mzila confirmed that humanitarian aid is being provided to the displaced residents.

“Humanitarian aid relief efforts were initiated by social partners, including the South African Red Cross Society and the Gift of the Givers foundation, who are providing aid such as meals, blankets and hygiene packs to the affected families,” Mzila said.

Local and provincial agencies are working together to ensure that immediate needs for food, shelter, and medical care are met as the community recovers.

COGTA MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi has dispatched a team from the provincial Disaster Management Centre to conduct a full assessment of the fire’s impact.

The team will evaluate the damage and coordinate ongoing relief and support measures to help the affected families rebuild their lives.
