Durban Customs Clearing Agent Sentenced To 8 Years For R2.4 Million Tax Fraud

A 33-year-old customs clearing agent, George Vorster, has been sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment for perpetrating a R2.4 million tax fraud against the South African Revenue Services (SARS) and his clients.

Vorster, the customs agent who operated through his company VRST International South Africa (Pty) Ltd, under-declared customs duties and Value Added Tax (VAT) on imported goods, pocketing the difference for himself.

The court heard that Vorster’s actions resulted in his clients losing around R2.3 million after they had to pay the shortfall of taxes to SARS.

The court sentenced Vorster, the customs agent to eight years in prison, while his company was fined R200,000, which was wholly suspended.

NPA spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara emphasized the importance of collaboration between the NPA, Hawks, and SARS in successfully prosecuting tax evasion cases, ensuring that those who evade tax are held accountable.
