Dumisani Khumalo To Give Evidence This Week As Ad Hoc Committee Reopens Hearings

Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee investigating allegations of police corruption is set to resume hearings this week, with crime intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo among the high-profile witnesses expected to testify.

Proceedings will continue from Wednesday, following a break after the committee wrapped up its previous round of hearings in November, ahead of the Christmas and year-end recess.

Parliament Police Corruption Inquiry Resumes This Week

The committee’s renewed hearings follow explosive testimony from several prominent figures, including KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, former police minister Bheki Cele, and businessman Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala, who is currently facing an attempted murder charge.

Matlala, the final witness in the last round of hearings, told the committee how he allegedly paid R500,000 to Cele and claimed the former minister interfered in police matters on his behalf.

Dumisani Khumalo and Khomotso Phahlane to Take the Stand

Attention now turns to further testimony this week, with former national police commissioner Khomotso Phahlane scheduled to give oral evidence on Wednesday, followed by Dumisani Khumalo on Thursday.

Other witnesses have included Senzo Mchunu, the minister currently on special leave, who defended his controversial decision to disband the political killings task team.

“Committee work will continue also this week, including the hearings by the Ad Hoc Committee investigating allegations by Mkhwanazi,” said Parliament spokesperson Moloto Mothapo.

Meanwhile, forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan has declined to appear before the committee in person, citing concerns for his personal safety. He warned that attending the hearings would make him a potential target.

The committee is expected to wrap up its work in February, with Mkhwanazi anticipated to be the final witness to testify.
