Dumisani Khumalo Says He Was Smeared for Taking On Corruption

Head of Crime Intelligence Dumisani Khumalo has told Parliament’s police ad hoc committee that he became the target of a “well-orchestrated misinformation” campaign following decisions he made to tackle fraud and corruption within the unit.

Appearing before the committee probing allegations of police corruption raised by KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, Khumalo said backlash followed actions that threatened entrenched interests.

He said some of his decisions, including identifying ghost employees in Crime Intelligence, were met with resistance from those who had benefitted from corrupt practices.

Ghost Employees and Recalled State Vehicles

Detailing his tenure, Khumalo said rooting out fraud exposed long-standing irregularities in the unit’s staffing.

“There are people that we had unearthed that were holding ranks up to full colonel who have never worked for the past 15 to 20 years,” said Khumalo.

He told MPs that even practical steps, such as recalling all state-owned vehicles from officials, proved controversial and fuelled negative coverage.

“The misinformation campaign started in social and print media related to each and every decision,” said Khumalo, adding that the pushback intensified as anti-corruption measures expanded.

Political Killings Task Team Not Dumisani Khumalo’s Call

Addressing claims around the political killings task team, Khumalo said decisions about its establishment or disbandment did not rest with him.

He told the committee that the creation of the task team was the responsibility of the national police commissioner and that the inter-ministerial task team had never supported its disbandment.

Khumalo maintained that despite the misinformation directed at him, his actions were aimed at restoring integrity within Crime Intelligence.
