Crime Intelligence Head Dumisani Khumalo Set To Return To Madlanga Commission

Embattled Crime Intelligence boss, Dumisani Khumalo, is expected to reappear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Thursday, marking his return more than a month after falling ill during his testimony.

Khumalo had been testifying for two days in late September when he became unwell on the morning of 1 October, just minutes before he was scheduled to resume giving evidence.

Reports at the time indicated that Khumalo was taken to hospital and later discharged to recover at home. The specific nature of his illness has not been publicly disclosed.

Khumalo was the third witness to appear before the commission, following earlier testimonies from National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola and KwaZulu-Natal police boss Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

During his previous appearance, he detailed the successes of the Political Killings Task Team under his command.

Dumisani Khumalo Faces Uncertain Future Amid Ongoing Corruption Case

As Khumalo prepares to continue his testimony, questions remain over his future as the head of Crime Intelligence.

Just two weeks after his sudden illness led to the postponement of proceedings, Khumalo appeared in the Pretoria Regional Court alongside two co-accused in a fraud and corruption case.

The charges stem from the alleged irregular appointment of 30-year-old Dineo Mokwele to an executive post within Crime Intelligence, despite her lack of policing experience.

Khumalo and five other senior officials are accused of manipulating the hiring process. He is also challenging his bail conditions, which currently bar him from returning to work.

Court Delays Extend Legal Battles

In a further twist, the magistrate presiding over Khumalo’s bail application recused himself, leading to delays in the hearing of his request to have the bail terms relaxed. That matter is expected to be heard later this month.

For now, Khumalo’s reappearance before the Madlanga Commission will likely draw public attention back to both his role within Crime Intelligence and the corruption allegations that continue to shadow his leadership.
