The End Of An Era? Muvhango’s Fate Uncertain As Producer Duma Ndlovu Faces Tax Fraud Charges

Duma Ndlovu, the producer of the well-liked South African soap Muvhango, faces severe tax penalties, casting doubt on the show’s survival.

Given that the show has been a mainstay of South African television for more than 25 years, both cast members and viewers are concerned about this issue.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has stated that Muvhango has a single season left on its current contract, which expires on July 31, 2025.

Fans are left wondering whether the series will continue after this season because SABC2’s head of communications, Mmoni Ngubane, said the network cannot speculate on the show’s future beyond the current contract.

“The SABC can confirm that only one season of ‘Muvhango’ is currently contracted and that the current contract is set to end on 31 July 2025. The SABC cannot comment on the future of the programme at this stage,” said Mmoni Ngubane, head of communications at SABC2.

Legal Troubles for Duma Ndlovu

Duma Ndlovu and two others are allegedly being charged with tax evasion and fraud.

Ndlovu was arrested in September 2024 together with his co-accused Rodney Mutsharini and Maxwell Mloyi, according to a statement released by SARS and the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC).

They were charged with 18 counts of tax fraud relating to Ndlovu’s personal and business income tax, which totalled almost R26 million when they appeared before the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crime Court.

While his co-accused were each given R50,000 bail, Ndlovu was given R100,000. The potential of renewing the show’s contract with SABC has apparently been hindered by the continuing legal challenges since the broadcaster needs a legitimate tax clearance certificate from Ndlovu’s company before discussing a renewal.
