Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla’s July Unrest Case Returns To Durban High Court

The July unrest case involving Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, daughter of former president Jacob Zuma, returns to the Durban High Court on Thursday morning.

She faces charges of inciting terrorism and public violence in connection with the deadly riots that swept through KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng in 2021.

The state alleges that several of Zuma-Sambudla’s posts on social media platform X played a role in fuelling the chaos, which led to widespread looting and unrest.

Legal Battle Over Charges Intensifies Aganist Duduzile Zuma

When Duduzile Zuma last appeared in court in March, her legal team, led by advocate Dali Mpofu, revealed plans to challenge the charges. They had petitioned the KwaZulu-Natal Director of Public Prosecutions to withdraw the case — a request that was denied.

Mpofu told the court they would take the matter to National Director of Public Prosecutions Shamila Batohi.

He explained that the outcome of this application, expected to be revealed in court on Thursday, could either bring the case to an end or confirm that preparations for the November trial must proceed.

State Prosecutor Ready to Proceed

The state prosecutor, who had previously requested a postponement for Thursday’s pre-trial conference, confirmed that the state is ready to move forward.

This means that unless the National Prosecuting Authority withdraws the case, Zuma-Sambudla’s high-profile trial is on track for November.
