Driver Blackout Leads To Serious Crash, Two Pedestrians Injured In Mountview KZN

Two pedestrians were struck by a bakkie on Jackaranda Avenue in Mountview, KwaZulu-Natal, on Wednesday morning, leaving one woman critically injured. The accident occurred at around 08:23, drawing multiple emergency calls to the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Operations Center.

When Reaction Officers and paramedics arrived, they found a female pedestrian lying in a prone position on the pavement next to a damaged white Mitsubishi Colt bakkie, which had overturned during the crash.

The 40-year-old driver told first responders that he had blacked out moments before the incident and could not recall what happened. Authorities confirmed that he had no known underlying medical conditions that could have caused the episode.

Witness Describes Frightening Moment of Impact

One of the victims, who sustained moderate injuries, recalled the terrifying moment when she and her colleague were struck.

“We were walking along Jackaranda Avenue when the vehicle suddenly swerved onto the pavement, striking us both,” she explained.

Her colleague, however, was left critically injured in the collision.

Both injured pedestrians were transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment. Emergency personnel worked swiftly at the scene to stabilize the critically injured woman before transferring her to medical care.

Authorities are continuing investigations into the cause of the blackout.
