Driftwood Killer Bevan Van Druten Faces New Prison Assault Charges In Knysna Jail Incident

The man accused of killing his former police officer girlfriend has landed in further trouble behind bars following an alleged violent incident involving fellow inmates.

Bevan van Druten is now facing additional charges after reportedly attacking two prisoners who refused to follow his instructions. It is also alleged that he attempted to coerce one inmate into harming the other.

The incident is understood to have taken place at Knysna prison, where van Druten is being held in connection with the murder of Anneke “Nicky” van Heerden.

New Assault Charges Added To Bevan Van Druten Murder Case

According to National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila, van Druten now faces two additional counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Though details surrounding the altercation remain unclear, the accusations stem from a confrontation after one inmate allegedly refused to carry out an act involving another prisoner.

Van Druten, 53, briefly appeared in court on Wednesday after awaiting placement at Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital.

“His case was postponed until May 7 for bed placement at Valkenberg,” Ntabazalila said.

“He has also appeared at Knysna Magistrate’s Court on other charges allegedly committed while in prison. These charges have been added to the murder charges in Plettenberg Bay.”

Correctional Services Details February Prison Altercation

Department of Correctional Services spokesperson Candice van Reenen confirmed the incident took place on February 22.

“The three inmates were involved in a physical altercation,” she said.

“As a result, all parties opened assault cases with the police, who attended to the incident and registered the matters.

“The inmates were also assessed at the centre’s healthcare facility for any injuries sustained.

“The individuals involved have since been separated to ensure stability and safety within the facility.

“The department continues to monitor the situation and will cooperate fully with all investigative processes.”

Background On Murder Case And Psychiatric Evaluation

Van Druten was arrested shortly after van Heerden’s body was discovered in Plettenberg Bay on January 18. The 54-year-old former detective had been in a relationship with him at the time.

He has since abandoned his bail application. During earlier court proceedings, van Druten told magistrate Stephan Lourens that he believed himself to be the Archangel Michael, while referring to van Heerden as Jesus Christ.

Following those claims, the court ordered a psychiatric assessment to determine whether he is fit to stand trial.
