Dramatic Arrests After Police Chase Leads To Mandrax Seizure Worth R97,000

Oudtshoorn police made a significant breakthrough in their fight against the drug trade, arresting four suspects after a high-speed chase on the night of Tuesday, April 1, 2025.

The police officers, who were conducting late-night patrols along Johan Gelderblom Street, apprehended the suspects after a tense pursuit.

The arrest led to the discovery of a large quantity of Mandrax tablets worth R97,000.

Seized Drugs

According to Police Spokesperson Sergeant Christopher Spies, the incident occurred at around 10:45 p.m. when officers noticed a vehicle speeding off as they approached it.

The chase quickly escalated, with the suspects throwing a parcel from the moving vehicle in an attempt to dispose of evidence.

The police were quick to catch up and retrieve the parcel, which contained 1,943 Mandrax tablets and 27 half tablets.

A further search also uncovered a sum of cash in the suspects’ possession.

Four Suspects Arrested And Charged With Drug Dealing

The four suspects, aged 20, 34, 35, and 40, were immediately arrested and charged with drug dealing.

They are expected to appear in the Oudtshoorn Magistrate’s Court once formally charged.

Sergeant Spies said this operation was part of their ongoing efforts to combat the illicit drug trade in the region.

He  emphasized the need of these arrests in protecting vulnerable communities from the dangers of drug abuse.

He also reaffirmed  the commitment of the Oudtshoorn police in curbing drug-related crimes.
