Dr Diana Ferrus Dies At 72: South Africa Mourns ‘People’s Poet’ And Justice Advocate

South Africa has lost one of its most influential cultural voices with the passing of acclaimed poet, author and activist Dr Diana Ferrus at the age of 72.

Her family confirmed the news in a statement released on Friday, saying her death was announced with “profound sadness and heavy hearts”.

They said the loss would be felt not only by relatives and friends but also by colleagues and the many communities shaped by her lifelong commitment to justice, dignity and humanity.

Tributes Pour In for a Voice That Shaped a Nation

Speaking on behalf of the family, niece and spokesperson Laniëlle Hartzenberg described Ferrus as far more than a public figure.

“Dr Ferrus was more than a public figure — she was a beloved family member, mentor, and guiding light,” Hartzenberg said. “Her legacy will continue to live on through her work, her voice, and the countless people she inspired across generations and borders.”

The family has asked the public and the media to respect their privacy as they mourn, adding that details about memorial arrangements will be shared at a later stage.

The Enduring Impact of the ‘People’s Poet’

Widely known as the “people’s poet”, Ferrus earned international recognition for using poetry as a tool to restore dignity to voices silenced by history.

Her most renowned poem, I’ve Come to Take You Home, written in honour of Sarah Baartman, marked a pivotal moment in South Africa’s post-apartheid cultural landscape.

In 2002, the poem was read aloud in the French Senate, an event that directly influenced the decision to return Baartman’s remains from France to South Africa.

Throughout her career, Ferrus’ work explored themes of memory, womanhood, dispossession, justice and healing, firmly establishing her as one of the country’s most important literary and cultural figures.

National Recognition for Dr Diana Ferrus Lasting Legacy

In 2022, Stellenbosch University awarded Ferrus an honorary doctorate in recognition of her extraordinary contribution to literature and heritage, acknowledging an influence that reached far beyond the written page.

The Ferrus family has expressed heartfelt thanks for the outpouring of support, prayers and messages of compassion received during what they described as a deeply difficult time.
