DOJ Investigates Security Breach After Shooting At Wynberg Court

Following a security breach, authorities have launched a full-scale investigation following a deadly shooting inside the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, April 8.

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DOJCD), together with key judicial stakeholders, has responded swiftly to the incident, which left an accused man dead.

The accused was allegedly linked to the gang known as Junky Funky Kidz (JFK)—dead with three gunshot wounds to the head.

Shooting Causes Chaos In Courtroom D

Panic erupted inside Courtroom D on the fourth floor when gunshots were fired just outside the courtroom.

The victim, who was scheduled to appear as an accused in a criminal matter, was fatally shot in what authorities believe to be a targeted hit.

Witnesses described scenes of chaos as court attendees and officials dropped to the ground for cover.

Initial speculation suggested the man was a state witness, but this was clarified by Western Cape NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila: “The deceased was an accused who appeared at Court D, not a witness.”

The incident has sparked serious concerns over courthouse security, particularly how the shooter managed to smuggle a firearm into the building undetected.

Top DOJ Officials Conduct Urgent Site Visit

Following the shooting, DOJ Director-General advocate Doc Mashabane, Acting Secretary-General in the Office of the Chief Justice advocate Marelize Potgieter, and Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions advocate Nicolette Bell led a high-level delegation to assess the scene.

The visit brought together senior representatives from the Office of the Chief Justice, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), SAPS, Legal Aid South Africa, and court security services.

The focus was on identifying any security lapses and implementing immediate corrective measures.

National Head of Security Ndwakhulu Rambau and the Western Cape Provincial Head of Security also participated in the technical assessment.

A key outcome of the site visit included directives for installing a new security scanner, tightening access to sensitive areas, and enhancing vetting processes for all court staff.

SAPS Launches Investigation as Security Tightens

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed an ongoing investigation to apprehend the perpetrators involved in the shooting.

Meanwhile, the Director-General has ordered an urgent report on the incident to be finalized and submitted to Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi and Chief Justice Mandisa Maya.

In the wake of the incident, court security across Cape Town and likely the country is expected to come under review.
