DJ Sumbody’s Brother Breaks Down After Mkhwanazi’s Claims: “He’s Gone, And Now They’re Using His Name As Scapegoat”

The family of the late music producer and entrepreneur DJ Sumbody has spoken out after the shocking release of his alleged killer on bail — and in the process, fiercely pushed back against explosive allegations from Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

During his testimony before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee, the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner hinted that DJ Sumbody’s murder might have been linked to drug dealings — a claim that sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry.

Days later, Katiso “KT” Molefe, the man accused of orchestrating the hit, walked free on bail with strict conditions.

But for DJ Sumbody’s brother, Koketso Sefoka, the decision has reopened deep wounds.

“It’s Hard to Accept, But We Respect the Law”

Speaking to eNCA journalist Silindelo Masikane, Koketso described the family’s heartbreak after learning of the bail outcome.

“It’s very difficult as a family to come to terms with the fact that he’s been granted bail. But as the justice system allows for that, we respect it. We just hope that the process will run its course and that justice will prevail. Still, it’s not easy to accept — not at all,” he said, visibly emotional.

Koketso’s words painted the picture of a family still reeling from grief — trying to keep faith in a system that seems to be moving on while their loved one lies in the ground.

“They’re Painting My Brother as a Criminal Because He Can’t Defend Himself”

Koketso didn’t hold back when addressing Mkhwanazi’s explosive claims. He said the allegations linking DJ Sumbody to drug activity were baseless and cruel, accusing some individuals of trying to rewrite history now that his brother isn’t here to defend himself.

“We don’t understand where these allegations are coming from. It feels like my brother is being used as a scapegoat — because he’s no longer here to speak for himself. It’s easy to throw dirt on the dead,” he said firmly.

He also clarified that the two men who died alongside the beloved “Monate Mpolaye” hitmaker — Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Muyeza — were not his bodyguards, as often reported.

“Sibusiso wasn’t a bodyguard; he was a DJ. He just helped my brother move safely through crowds and venues. This narrative that he drove around with security because of threats is not true — it’s insulting,” he added.

Koketso’s raw words have struck a chord with South Africans who still mourn DJ Sumbody’s brutal killing in November 2022. For the Sefoka family, the pain lingers — and as Koketso made clear, they won’t allow his legacy to be rewritten.

“My brother built his name with hard work and passion. He deserves to rest with dignity, not with lies hanging over his name,” he said.
