DJ Sbu’s Radio 2000 Show Faces BCCSA Probe Over Religious And Political Bias Claims

Radio 2000’s beloved morning programme, The Big Breakfast Show, helmed by Sibusiso “DJ Sbu” Leope, Nathi Ndamase, and Lelo Mzaca, has landed in hot water after a listener filed a formal complaint with the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA).

The trio, known for their energetic and outspoken on-air presence, stand accused of promoting personal religious and political opinions during their live broadcasts.

Reports suggest that one listener raised concerns specifically about co-host Nathi Ndamase’s frequent reading of Bible verses, claiming it gave undue prominence to Christianity.

“I’m a regular listener of Radio 2000, and I have a concern about Nathi Ndamase reading biblical scriptures on the show and preaching,” the complaint read.

“South Africa has many religions, so one religion cannot be given preference over the others. It’s discrimination because others are not given a platform. Nathi must keep her religion to herself.”

Religious Freedom vs Broadcasting Rules

In response to the complaint, Ndamase stood firm, defending her expression of faith on air.
“I’m not going to apologise for reading scripture, for loving my God and sharing the Word,” she stated.

The controversy intensified when another listener accused DJ Sbu and co-host Lelo Mzaca of showing bias towards the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party. DJ Sbu read the complaint on air, acknowledging the seriousness of the accusation while insisting that his team remained impartial.

Mzaca challenged the claims, calling for proof of political favouritism, while DJ Sbu reiterated their commitment to ethical broadcasting.

“We know that we need to remain neutral on political views,” he said. “I don’t remember an instance where we gave favour to one party over another. And we would never campaign for any political party, that would be irresponsible.”

BCCSA Investigation Underway

The BCCSA has confirmed that an investigation is in progress to determine whether the Radio 2000 presenters breached any broadcasting regulations.

Meanwhile, The Big Breakfast Show continues to air as the inquiry unfolds, with listeners closely watching how the outcome might affect one of the station’s most popular programmes.
