DJ Maphorisa Says Amapiano Artists Face Fierce Competition In Short-Attention-Span Era

DJ Maphorisa, one of South Africa’s most influential music producers, says the amapiano scene has never been more competitive.

Speaking in a candid Metro FM interview, the hitmaker admitted that thriving in the genre now requires more than just talent — it takes strategy, timing, and adaptability.

“It’s tough now, it’s not easy, it’s not like before,” Maphorisa revealed. “There’s too much competition, and people have short attention spans.”

Fans Want Singles, Not Albums – DJ Maphorisa

According to Maphorisa, music lovers increasingly prefer to connect with just one hit track instead of an entire album. “They prefer one song from you and are fine with that song for about six months,” he explained.

“But if you give them 10 hot songs, you won’t get a good reception.” This trend has changed how artists approach music production and release strategies, with many focusing on singles to capture attention quickly.

Ngomoya Shows the Challenge

Using his latest project as an example, Maphorisa shared how his own work reflects this shift in listening habits.

“So far, I dropped like 28 songs, but they like one song,” DJ Maphorisa said of his album Ngomoya.
