DJ Maphorisa Explains The Origin Of Scorpion Kings’ Name

DJ Maphorisa has finally revealed the true story behind the name Scorpion Kings. In a candid Metro FM interview on 12 August 2025, the producer shared how he and his longtime collaborator Kabza De Small officially sealed their musical partnership during the rise of Amapiano.

“Kabza had a plan to drop an album. We had a few songs that were hot at the time, and I compiled a quick list and told them, ‘Let’s drop this and call it Scorpion Kings,’” Maphorisa explained.

The name marked the beginning of a powerhouse duo that would go on to dominate the local and international music scene.

The Zodiac Sign Behind the Name

Maphorisa revealed that the inspiration for the name came from something simple—his zodiac sign.

“I’m a Scorpio, but Kabza was born on the 26th of November (Sagittarius). I was just rushing through everything and didn’t give it much thought,” he admitted with a laugh.

While astrology wasn’t the focus at the time, the name stuck and quickly became a brand synonymous with chart-topping hits and unforgettable live performances.
