Diepkloof Protest Turns Violent: Trucks Looted As Residents Block Major Highways

Police are monitoring a violent protest at the Diepkloof Hostel in Soweto, where residents have taken to the streets over prolonged power outages.

On Saturday morning, protesters blockaded the N12 East/N1 North highway at the Diepkloof Interchange, as well as Chris Hani Road, using burning tyres and debris.

Trucks Looted as Diepkloof Police Contain Situation

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Xolani Fihla confirmed that two trucks were looted during the unrest.

“At this stage, JMPD and SAPS Public Order Policing Units have successfully pushed back and contained the protesters within the perimeter of the hostel,” said Fihla.

“However, the situation remains highly volatile. Officers are maintaining a strong presence in the area to ensure the safety of motorists and to prevent further property damage.”

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.

Service Delivery Issues at Centre of Unrest

Fihla said the protest is linked to ongoing service delivery concerns within the Diepkloof Hostel community.

“The preliminary reason cited for the protest relates to ongoing service delivery issues within the Diepkloof Hostel community,” he said.

Motorists have been urged to exercise extreme caution when travelling near affected routes.

The area has previously experienced violent unrest. In May last year, two people were killed during a service delivery protest at the same hostel.

Police remain on high alert as tensions continue.
