Detective Reveals High-Risk Threats Faced By Team Investigating Armand Swart Murder

A detective from the organised crime division has revealed that his team faced life-threatening risks while investigating the murder of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart.

Swart was gunned down in April 2024 outside his company’s premises in Vereeniging. His firm, QTech, had recently reported gross misconduct involving inflated prices on a Transnet Freight Rail tender.

On Monday, Witness A gave partial testimony before the Madlanga Commission, appearing from a safe house at an undisclosed location. His voice was broadcast, but his face remained hidden for security reasons.

Police Officer Among Those Arrested After Swart’s Killing

Just hours after the fatal shooting, three suspects — including a police officer — were taken into custody in connection with Swart’s murder.

Speaking before the commission, Witness A described the fear that gripped the investigation team once the arrests were made.

“It was not safe to even go to our office because the police were also now involved in this,” the detective said.

Team Placed Under 24-Hour Protection After High-Risk Threat Alert

According to Witness A, a threat risk assessment conducted by Crime Intelligence classified their assignment as high risk.

“The threat risk assessment was conducted, and it was classified as high risk, so in other words, our lives were in extreme danger,” he explained.

In response, the entire team was swiftly placed under round-the-clock police protection.

“When I opened the window, I saw five marked police vehicles with sirens and their blue lights on. When I went to them, they told me that they were being tasked to come and give protection to me overnight. It was actually the start of 24-hour protection,” the detective recounted.

The commission continues to hear testimony about the circumstances surrounding Swart’s murder and the possible corruption links connected to the case.
