Detective Faces Corruption Charges For Allegedly Releasing Child Rape Suspect

A 46-year-old Limpopo police sergeant, Klass Edmond Mulungwa, attached to the Tzaneen family violence, child protection, and sexual offences (FCS) unit, has been arrested and charged with corruption and defeating the ends of justice.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, confirmed that Mulungwa’s arrest follows an investigation by the provincial anti-corruption unit.

Allegations Against Mulungwa

Mashaba disclosed that, “the allegations against Mulungwa date back to February 6, 2024, when he allegedly failed to escort a prisoner for mental observation at a mental hospital.

“On the same day, concerns were raised when an accused in a schedule six offence, a case of rape of a minor, was released from custody without a formal bail application.”

An internal investigation revealed that Mulungwa had allegedly acted without authorization, misleading the prosecutor into believing that the bail was not opposed.

Police Commissioner Reaffirms Zero-Tolerance Stance On Corruption

Provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has welcomed Mulungwa’s arrest, reaffirming the police’s “zero-tolerance stance on corruption.”

Mulungwa was released on R1,000 bail and is expected to appear in court again on April 25. If convicted, he will face the full might of the law, emphasizing the police’s commitment to eradicating corruption within their ranks.
