Deputy Police Minister Cassel Mathale Set To Appear Before Parliament In Police Corruption Probe

Day thirteen of Parliament’s ad hoc committee hearings into police corruption continues on Tuesday, with Deputy Police Minister Cassel Mathale expected to take centre stage.

Mathale, appointed in July last year alongside Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, will appear before the committee for two days. His appearance follows Mchunu’s, who is currently on a leave of absence amid allegations of political interference.

During Mchunu’s earlier testimony, his controversial decision to dissolve the political killings task team through a policy directive came under scrutiny. Until now, Mathale’s name has seldom featured in the hearings — but that’s set to change.

MPs to Question Cassel Mathale on Disbanded Task Team

Evidence leader Advocate Norman Arendse and committee members are expected to question Mathale extensively about his knowledge of Mchunu’s directive to disband the political killings task team. They will also probe his working relationship with the minister.

The committee aims to corroborate testimonies already given by National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola and Mchunu.

Former Police Minister Bheki Cele, who testified last Friday, told MPs that Mchunu’s decision to disband the task team was “incorrect”, stressing that only the ministerial committee responsible for establishing the task team had the authority to dissolve it.

Mathale will likely be questioned about the task team and whether he is familiar with any individuals implicated in police corruption.

After Mathale’s appearance, Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia and Mchunu’s second deputy, Polly Boshielo, are expected to testify before the committee.
