Deputy Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya To Appeal Court Ruling After Failed Bid To Return To Work

Deputy National Police Commissioner for Crime Detection, Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya, has vowed to appeal after the Pretoria High Court dismissed his urgent bid to return to work.

The court ruling came on Tuesday afternoon, following his challenge against being placed on a leave of absence in July.

Judge Norman Davis ruled that Sibiya’s legal team attempted to present his enforced leave as a suspension, but there was no evidence to support the claim.

Allegations of Corruption Spark Shadrack Sibiya Leave of Absence

Sibiya was instructed to remain at home by National Commissioner Fannie Masemola after KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi implicated him in corruption allegations linked to the criminal justice system.

Despite his insistence that Masemola’s decision amounted to a disguised suspension, the court found otherwise. Importantly, Sibiya’s salary has not been affected during this period of leave.

In July, a risk assessment declared Sibiya a high-risk individual, leading to the allocation of a personal protection team—handpicked by Sibiya himself.

The court dismissed his application with costs, but the seasoned police officer has already made clear his intention to appeal the ruling.
