Delft Leads Cape Town in Illegal Firearm Recoveries, Says Premier Alan Winde

As Cape Town continues to grapple with persistent gun violence, Delft has emerged as a notable hotspot for successful firearm recoveries. Authorities say the area is showing promising improvements in efforts to curb illegal weapons.

After meeting with Western Cape government officials, the City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) team, and SAPS members in Delft, Premier Alan Winde highlighted the strides being made in the community.

A total of 130 LEAP officers are deployed in the neighbourhood, working closely with police in an area long associated with some of the region’s toughest crime statistics.

Winde noted encouraging developments, “The interesting data point from LEAP is that they are now the number one area on the firearms taken off the streets, out of the circulation system, of course, is really to be recognised.”

Surge in Illegal Firearm Recoveries in Delft

Delft’s rise to the top position for firearm removals marks a shift in an area that has faced high levels of violent crime.

The stepped-up collaboration between LEAP and SAPS has contributed to more illegal guns being removed from circulation, officials say.
