Horror In Delft As Dog Drags Newborn’s Body Through Streets

Shock and heartbreak gripped the Delft community on Monday afternoon when residents discovered a dog carrying the body of a newborn baby boy in its mouth.

The gruesome discovery was made around 3:30pm in Block R1, when a woman spotted the dog with the infant — who still had his umbilical cord attached — dangling from its jaws.

‘The dog put the baby down when called’

Shamiela Abrahams, Chairperson of the Community in Blue (CIB), was among the first to arrive at the scene. “A woman witnessed the dog carrying the baby in its mouth. When she called the dog, it immediately put the baby down,” Abrahams said.

“Someone came to call me, and when I arrived, I tried to keep people away because everyone wanted to see the child.”

Abrahams said it remains unclear who the baby belongs to, but the area is being closely monitored as investigations continue.

‘Not the first time babies are dumped here’

Salama Topass, Chairperson of the Blikkiesdorp Neighbourhood Watch, said this was not the first time a newborn had been found abandoned in the area.

“When I arrived, I cordoned off the scene before police arrived. We’ve had other incidents where babies were dumped, but we never found the parents,” Topass explained.

“Only in one case was the mother identified — in Blikkiesdorp — but most of the babies are not from this area. They are just dumped here.”

Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala confirmed that an inquest docket has been opened.

“Delft police registered an inquest following the discovery of the body of an unknown baby boy at Blikkiesdorp next to R1 on Monday, 27 October, around 3:30pm. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation,” Gwala said.

Wider issue of baby abandonment

Earlier this month, Western Cape Minister for Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, told Daily Voice that identifying mothers in such cases remains an enormous challenge.

“In most cases, the babies are found in isolated areas without witnesses or CCTV footage, making it extremely difficult to trace the person,” Marais said.

“Mothers who abandon their babies are often discreet. Communities must be vigilant and report suspicious behaviour following a birth.”
