Debora Patta Fired From CBS News As Network Shuts Down Johannesburg Bureau

Veteran South African journalist Debora Patta has been dismissed from CBS News amid widespread layoffs that have affected around 100 staff members across the network.

Based in Johannesburg, Patta spent 12 years as a foreign correspondent for CBS, covering major global conflicts, including those in Syria, Ukraine, and the Israel-Hamas war.

Known for her fearless field reporting, she became one of the network’s most recognisable international correspondents.

Sources suggest that Patta’s dismissal stemmed from a last-minute decision by CBS’s new editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss, who reportedly removed a male correspondent from the layoff list and added Patta’s name just hours before the cuts were finalised.

The network has also closed its Johannesburg bureau, effectively ending CBS’s on-the-ground presence in southern Africa.

CBS Layoffs and Controversy Surrounding Patta’s Exit

Patta’s departure follows months of internal tension at CBS. The move comes shortly after her August 7 interview with U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, who later accused the network of editing the interview unfairly and misrepresenting his remarks on Gaza.

Despite the controversy, Patta had recently signed a new three-year contract with CBS and is reportedly considering legal action against the network following her unexpected termination.

A Fearless Career Cut Short

Before joining CBS, Patta built an esteemed career in South African media, starting at Radio 702 before becoming the executive producer and host of the acclaimed investigative programme 3rd Degree on etv.

Former colleagues and industry peers have described her as “fearless and fair,” highlighting her dedication to ethical journalism and her willingness to report from some of the world’s most dangerous regions.

Her departure, they say, leaves a significant gap in CBS’s international coverage.

Reacting to the news of Debora Patta exit from the American news network on X (Former Twitter), social media user @AlexvandeHeever wrote, “Can’t have anyone independent and with integrity at CBS… Now a politically controlled organisation, whose news cannot be trusted. Deborah is better off elsewhere. But should sue the pants off them.”
