Deadly Police Shootout: Two Zama Zamas Killed In West Rand Gun Battle

Two suspected illegal miners, commonly known as zama zamas, were killed during a shootout with police in the early hours of Sunday morning on the West Rand.
The confrontation unfolded in Carletonville when members of the South African Police Service’s National Intervention Unit (NIU) carried out an intelligence-driven operation targeting illegal mining activity.
SAPS said the operation followed information suggesting that the suspects were in possession of a large cache of illegal firearms and ammunition.
Suspects Open Fire as SAPS Move In
SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the operation escalated shortly after officers arrived at the identified location.
“Information they had received indicated that there were illegal miners in possession of a large consignment of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
“Upon arrival at the targeted house at around 4am on Sunday morning, members observed suspects attempting to flee by jumping out through windows. The suspects immediately opened fire on police officers, and members responded accordingly,” Mathe said.

“As a result of the confrontation, two illegal miners were declared dead at the scene, two AK47s, two pistols and ammunition were seized.”
Police Continue Manhunt as Surveillance Intensifies
Mathe confirmed that no officers were injured during the high-risk operation.
“The suspects identified as Basotho nationals are assessed as extremely dangerous and pose a threat to public safety, as they showed no hesitation in engaging police.
“SAPS continue to conduct surveillance operations in the area to apprehend those who ran into the bushes,” Mathe said.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing as police maintain a presence in the area.
