Deadly Eldorado Park Shooting Leaves Two Dead, Six Injured As Police Launch Manhunt

Two people have lost their lives and six others were injured after gunmen opened fire during a gathering in Eldorado Park, Johannesburg, late on Saturday night.

Police confirmed that officers were called to the scene at around 10.30pm following reports of gunfire.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), paramedics found two victims who had already died at the scene, while six others who sustained gunshot wounds were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

SAPS spokesperson Brig Brenda Muridili described the situation officers encountered upon arrival.

“On [Saturday] at about 10.30pm, the police responded to a shooting incident where they found two people already declared dead by paramedics and six taken to a local hospital with gunshot wounds.”

Armed group allegedly opened fire during social gathering

Investigators believe the victims had been attending a social gathering when the violence erupted.

Preliminary information suggests that several armed men entered the property and began firing at people in the yard before fleeing.

“It is alleged that there was a social gathering at the venue when a group of about eight unknown men entered the yard and started shooting randomly at the people before fleeing the scene on foot,” Muridili said.

At this stage, no arrests have been made and the motive behind the attack remains unclear.

“No suspects arrested yet, and the motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage. The police request anyone who may have information that can assist with investigations [to contact them].”

SANDF deployment adds security pressure in Eldorado Park

The deadly shooting comes as authorities intensify security operations in parts of southern Johannesburg.

In recent days, members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) have been deployed to support policing efforts in areas such as Eldorado Park and Riverlea. Armoured military vehicles were spotted patrolling the neighbourhoods as part of an intervention targeting illegal mining activities and organised crime networks.

Last week, President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed that 550 soldiers had been sent to Gauteng to assist police in tackling illegal mining syndicates and other criminal operations.

The initiative, expected to cost more than R80 million, forms part of a wider national effort to strengthen law enforcement in crime-affected areas.

Police told Parliament’s portfolio committee on police that the operation began on 1 March and is scheduled to continue until 31 March 2027.
