Deadly Diepkloof Protest Leaves Trucks Looted And Two Dead

A protest in Diepkloof, south of Johannesburg, turned deadly this week as residents took to the streets demanding improved water, sanitation, and housing. Tensions ran high as demonstrators barricaded the busy Diepkloof Interchange with burning tyres and rocks, severely disrupting traffic in parts of Soweto.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) confirmed that the interchange was heavily affected by the unrest. Residents, particularly from the Diepkloof hostel area, voiced long-standing frustrations over government inaction.

Trucks Targeted Amid Diepkloof Unrest, Protester Killed in Chaos

According to reports from eNCA, at least two people have died as a result of the protest. One person was reportedly struck by a truck attempting to flee after it was looted by protesters. Another individual sustained injuries during the demonstrations and was rushed to hospital for treatment.

One truck was torched while another was looted during the volatile scene. Law enforcement and emergency services remain on high alert as the situation continues to develop.

Authorities Monitor Tense Standoff in Soweto

With the atmosphere still tense, authorities are closely monitoring the situation. The JMPD has urged motorists to avoid the affected areas and make use of alternative routes where possible.
