Deadly Cash Heist: KZN Robber Dies After Bomb Blunder

KwaZulu-Natal police have launched a manhunt for a group of armed suspects following a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist in Kranskop.

Authorities confirmed that a large number of suspects were involved in the brazen heist, which saw an undisclosed amount of money stolen.

Heist Suspect Found Dead After Alleged Explosives Mishap

Provincial police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said one of the alleged perpetrators was later discovered dead.

“He was found dead inside an abandoned vehicle along the gravel road near Tugela River, towards Nkandla on Tuesday,” he said.

Netshiunda added that the suspect is believed to have sustained fatal injuries while handling explosives during the robbery on Monday.

Vehicles Hijacked and Firearms Stolen During Heist

Police reported that three security guards were robbed of their firearms during the incident, while four vehicles were hijacked and used as getaway cars.

The suspects also allegedly fired shots in the direction of a nearby police station, although no injuries were reported among officers or members of the public.

Netshiunda confirmed that the group is believed to consist of at least 12 suspects, with police intensifying efforts to track them down.

“A manhunt for more suspects, who were believed to be at least 12 in number, is underway,” he said.

Police have urged anyone with information to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
