De Lille’s Interim SA Tourism Board: A Step Forward Or Just Another Quick Fix?

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille has once again stepped into the spotlight—this time by appointing an interim board of directors at SA Tourism after dissolving the previous one earlier this week.

While her decisiveness may appear refreshing in a political landscape often accused of dragging its feet, the question remains: is this a step toward genuine reform or merely a plaster over a festering wound?

The previous board’s removal stemmed from claims that it contravened its charter by holding a special meeting not convened by the chairperson. This came hot on the heels of their decision to suspend CEO Nombulelo Guliwe for alleged misconduct. The turbulence is a clear sign of deeper instability within SA Tourism’s leadership structures.

De Lille has now entrusted the interim leadership to Dr Mzamo Masito, joined by Kholeka Zama, Shakir Jeeva, Khomotso Brian Mosehla, Siobhan Leyden, and the department’s Deputy Director-General, Dr Shamilla Chettiar.

Her spokesperson, Aldrin Sampear, defended the appointments: “The above members possess collective knowledge, experience and qualifications relating to the function of the South African Tourism board.”

On paper, this looks like a formidable lineup. But South Africans have every reason to be cautious. Interim boards have a tendency to stretch into semi-permanent placeholders in our public institutions.

Will this team simply keep the lights on until permanent members arrive, or will they bring meaningful change to a sector still struggling to recover from COVID-19 and ongoing governance failures?

Sampear added: “In due course, the minister will announce the process to appoint permanent members of the South African Tourism board.” That “due course” is where skepticism creeps in. Too often, timelines around such processes drag on, leaving institutions stuck in limbo while urgent reforms are put on hold.

From where we sit, the appointment of this interim board should not be mistaken for a solution. It is merely the start of a longer journey. South Africa’s tourism sector deserves stable, transparent, and accountable leadership—not endless reshuffles and boardroom drama.
