David Fincher Won’t Renew Netflix Deal After Years With Streaming Giant

Renowned filmmaker David Fincher is set to end his exclusive deal with Netflix, bringing a significant chapter in his long-standing relationship with the streaming giant closer to an end.

Fincher’s current agreement expires next year, but the acclaimed director is not expected to immediately move his business to another studio.

People familiar with the matter said Fincher could still make his next film for Netflix, despite choosing not to enter another large overall agreement with the company.

David Fincher’s Netflix deal began in 2020, after the filmmaker established himself as one of the most influential directors of the modern era.

His acclaimed filmography includes Fight Club, Zodiac and The Social Network, while his Netflix projects have included Mank and The Killer.

His upcoming Netflix film, The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, stars Brad Pitt and serves as a sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

People familiar with Fincher’s plans said he currently sees little reason to maintain a large overall deal with a single company, with such agreements typically helping directors and producers cover the operating costs of their production businesses.

A representative for Fincher declined to comment on the development.

Netflix Loses Another Major Creative Partner

David Fincher’s departure from the Netflix deal comes amid a series of changes involving other high-profile filmmakers and producers who have previously maintained long-term relationships with the streaming service.

Earlier this week, Shawn Levy, producer of Stranger Things, announced that he was moving his television business to Walt Disney Co.

Levy’s move followed the Duffer brothers, the creators of Stranger Things, who left Netflix and signed a deal with Paramount Skydance Corp.

Noah Baumbach, known for films including Marriage Story and White Noise, also recently signed an agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery Inc.

Baumbach had made his previous four films for Netflix, while Levy had maintained a deal with the company since 2017.

David Fincher’s Long Netflix History

David Fincher’s relationship with Netflix stretches back further than his 2020 exclusive agreement.

He was among the key creative figures behind House of Cards, serving as a director and executive producer on the landmark Netflix original series.

Fincher also produced the acclaimed series Mindhunter and the animated anthology Love, Death & Robots for the streaming platform.

His next major Netflix release, The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, is scheduled for a theatrical release in October.

The decision to give the film a significant cinema run represents an unusually prominent theatrical strategy for Netflix, which has faced increasing pressure from filmmakers seeking traditional cinema distribution for major productions.
