Dali Mpofu Denies Claims Of Proposing EFF Merger With Jacob Zuma’s MK Party

Former EFF chairperson and current MK Party (MKP) national command member Dali Mpofu has refuted allegations made by EFF leader Julius Malema that he proposed the dissolution of the EFF to merge with the MK Party.

Mpofu addressed the claims during a media briefing on Wednesday, labeling them as “nonsense” and a complete fabrication.

Malema’s Allegations

The controversy stems from comments made by Malema during an EFF podcast. Malema claimed Mpofu had suggested the EFF and other opposition parties dissolve and form a unified entity under former president Jacob Zuma’s leadership.

“There was a meeting of opposition parties that Zuma called. Dali went to make a presentation of a paper in that first meeting, where he said the EFF must close down with the other parties and then form something under Zuma’s leadership. We said, ‘no ways, it’s not going to happen,’” Malema stated.

Dali Mpofu’s Response

Mpofu dismissed these assertions as false, clarifying that his proposal was to foster unity among progressive political movements rather than initiate a merger with the MK Party.

“This nonsense that I said parties must collapse into MK is a lie. It did not happen. It’s just something that never happened,” Mpofu said.

He emphasised his call for a unified platform for progressive parties to collaborate while allowing individual parties to maintain their independence.

“Unity and merging are two different things. The mere fact that we’re saying we want to unify parties means that people are free to stay in their parties, whoever that can be regarded as a progressive party,” he explained.

Promoting Unity Among Progressive Parties

Mpofu pointed out the importance of strengthening collaboration among like-minded political organisations, citing successful examples of similar efforts in other African countries.

He acknowledged the challenges in achieving such unity, stating, “It’s not an instant coffee that you just stir and have unity tomorrow. If one day we all merge under one organisation in 10 or 30 years’ time, so be it, but we’re not going to be a party to divide our people.”

Mpofu recently left the EFF to join the MK Party, a move that has sparked debate and drawn attention due to other high-profile defections, including former EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu.
