DA To eThekwini: Speed Up Housing Delivery

"The same problem has arisen with the delivery of actual houses. The 2020/2021 budget was over R1 billion, of which almost 80% was spent. The city fell far short of its own target of 4 072 houses, instead of building only 1 737.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called for the speedy delivery of housing projects in eThekwini, SurgeZirc SA reports.

According to a statement issued by DA’s Cllr. Zamani Khuzwayo on Tuesday, the party expressed concerns over the slow pace of housing delivery in eThekwini.

“Despite housing delivery coming to a standstill, costs remain high and the budgets are still being spent.

“EThekwini has only been able to deliver 7 539 title deeds from 2017 to date. The municipality claims the average title deed costs R1 200 to deliver, but the actual budget spent shows that these title deeds cost a staggering R18 000 per title deed. Many of the title deed handovers are accompanied by flashy events that drive up the costs,” Khuzwayo said.

Khuzwayo went further to reveal that efforts have been made by the DA to push the municipality to increase the handover of title deeds to eThekwini residents.

“Title deeds not only grant residents security and dignity, but also the financial capability to leverage their assets and improve their lives. Tens of thousands of eThekwini residents could have benefited if the title deed program was effectively run.

“These statistics paint a clear picture: eThekwini Municipality is spending money at a rate of knots but failing to deliver on key targets. The delivery of both houses and title deeds is simply unacceptable,” the statement reads.
