DA Opens Corruption Case Against Tolashe Over ‘Children’s Cars’ Scandal

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is set to open a corruption case against Minister of Social Development Sisisi Tolashe on Thursday.

The move relates to allegations that vehicles donated to the African National Congress Women’s League were instead registered in the names of her children.

The development comes shortly after ActionSA filed a similar complaint at the Cape Town Police Station, criticising the DA for duplicating efforts and misusing public resources.

Competing Complaints and Calls for Investigation

ActionSA Member of Parliament Dereleen James previously laid a criminal complaint against Tolashe under the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act.

The complaint followed a report by Daily Maverick which indicated that vehicles intended for the ANC Women’s League had been registered under the names of Tolashe’s two children.

Both the DA and ActionSA have also escalated the matter to Parliament’s Ethics Committee and the Public Protector.

DA MP Nazley Sharif said she would request the South African Police Service to conduct a full and independent investigation into how the vehicles were registered.

Tolashe Responds as Political Tensions Escalate

According to reports by the Sunday Times, Tolashe told the African National Congress that the vehicles were not declared to Parliament because they were held by her family for safekeeping.

She has also reportedly told the ANC’s Integrity Commission that the decision was aimed at protecting party assets from potential seizure during a period of financial strain.

ActionSA has criticised the DA’s move, describing it as an attempt to gain relevance, and indicated that it is willing to share details of the investigating officer so that any additional information can be incorporated into the existing case.

The party further stated that it is pursuing additional leads and investigating other ministers who may be linked to the matter.

The Daily Maverick report also implicated Minister Maropene Ramokgopa, alleging that vehicles connected to her have been used by her son, mother and a close associate.
