DA Offers R500,000 Reward As Ninth Woman Is Found Dead In Ekurhuleni

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has announced a R500,000 reward for information that could help identify those responsible for the deaths of women in Ekurhuleni.

The announcement comes as police investigate the discovery of a ninth woman’s body in the metro, just days after the South African Police Service (SAPS) announced its own R400,000 reward for information that could lead to arrests.

DA Offers R500,000 Reward For Information

DA Ekurhuleni mayoral candidate Khathutshelo Rasilingwane announced the party’s reward on Thursday, 17 September 2026, saying the move was intended to support the investigation already being conducted by law enforcement.

“The DA is adding to the efforts of law enforcement already underway, and we are doing this to supplement and augment those efforts. The DA is adding extra reason for all relevant information to be handed over now, to address this crisis quickly,” said Rasilingwane.

She said the DA would not accept information directly from members of the public. Instead, anyone with information would need to report it to SAPS and provide the DA with proof that the information had been formally recorded with police.

“The DA will not accept direct tip-offs or reports, but will only consider properly lodged police records as sufficient.”

The party said the reward was being offered because it “cares deeply about the safety of women in Ekurhuleni, and South Africa at large.”

Police Question How DA Reward Will Work

The DA’s announcement has raised questions about how its reward will fit into the process already used by law enforcement.

Deputy National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Tebello Mosikili said police were not aware of the conditions attached to the DA’s offer and questioned how the political party intended to work alongside the state investigation.

“We do not know what the conditions of the Democratic Alliance are. So far, I know the informants will be in the communities. I don’t know how the DA is going to combine this, whether they are legally correct,” she said.

“In announcing the reward, what I would have done would be to collaborate with the state because this is the state’s issue.”

Mosikili said police already have an established process for rewards connected to criminal investigations, including a committee that evaluates information supplied by informants. She said the R400,000 reward announced by acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane would follow that process.

Ninth Woman Found Dead As Investigation Intensifies

The reward announcements come as the investigation widens following the discovery of another woman’s body in Ekurhuleni.

Police discovered the ninth body on Thursday, with preliminary information indicating that the woman may have been killed elsewhere before her body was dumped at the scene. Authorities have not confirmed that the latest death is connected to the previous cases.

The deaths have occurred across different parts of Ekurhuleni over the past two months, prompting a specialised police investigation and increased attention from national law-enforcement structures.

SAPS has repeatedly urged members of the public to provide information that could assist investigators. The police reward currently stands at R400,000, while the DA has separately announced its R500,000 offer.

The investigation remains ongoing, and police have yet to establish whether the deaths were carried out by one person, multiple perpetrators or whether the cases are otherwise connected.
