Da L.E.S Opens Up About His Stroke And Emotional Move To U.S: “Thought I Was Going To Die”
Mzansi hip-hop fans were left emotional after rapper Da L.E.S (real name Leslie Mampe Jr) dropped a heartfelt video on his YouTube channel. In it, the Lifestyle hitmaker revealed not only that he has relocated to Houston, Texas, but also the chilling reality of surviving a life-altering stroke in July 2024.
The rapper hosted an intimate farewell party in Johannesburg before leaving, attended by his closest industry brothers including L-Tido, Maggz, and Don Design. But it was his raw honesty about almost losing his life that left fans shaken.
“People Thought I Was Going to Die”
Opening up in the clip, Da L.E.S shared that the stroke nearly claimed his life and that many around him had already feared the worst.
“I suffered a stroke. People thought I was going to die. I made it,” he said, his voice heavy with emotion.
The rapper said the terrifying ordeal has changed his life forever, but he’s choosing to see survival as a blessing. “I am just lucky to be alive,” he told his supporters. “Right now, it’s about motivating people because this is real — it can happen to anybody.”
Moving to the U.S. to Heal and Reconnect
Da L.E.S explained that his decision to move to Houston is all about family and healing. “We are moving to Houston, Texas. I am going out there to spend some time with my family in the States, but do not worry, Mzansi, I will be back,” he reassured fans.
Despite his departure, the rapper emphasized that this is not the end of his journey in South Africa. “This is just a chapter. I will return,” he said.

At his farewell, emotions ran high. L-Tido, who has been by his side through thick and thin, gave a heartfelt send-off:
“When you come back, everything is gonna be good. You know we got you, we love you. We got your back forever.”
Fans also flooded the comments section with messages of support: One fan wrote, “Really good to see you recovering! Shoutout to everyone in the video, you have really good and supportive people around you. Come back to SA.”

Da L.E.S may have left for now, but Mzansi is standing firmly behind him as he heals, inspires, and rebuilds.
