The Democratic Alliance (DA) candidate for Ward 26 & 29 in Matjhabeng Local Municipality, Relebohile Morake has revealed a R12.2m failed Welkom Stadium project in the area, SurgeZirc SA reports.

According to a statement made available to SurgeZirc SA on Sunday, it was gathered that after an oversight inspection at Zuka Baloi Stadium in Thabong, Welkom it was discovered that the ANC-led municipality has failed in the project.

It was gathered that some of the major parts of the facilities like the toilets were not working as the DA revealed that the stadium had become a dumping site.

“The toilets are not working, taps stolen, fences stolen, pavilion vandalized, grass not cut, windows broken, gates stolen, chairs vandalized among other defects.

“Due to infrequent refuse collection and mismanagement within the department the stadium has also turned into a dumping site,” the statement reads.

According to the statement, an estimated R8.7 million was allegedly spent on the project with a further R3.5 million reportedly budgeted for completion which brings the total construction costs to R12.2 million.

“An estimated R8.7 million has allegedly been spent on the stadium to date, and with a further R3.5 million reportedly budgeted it will bring the total estimated construction costs to R12.2 million for what is effectively a dumpsite. This is a total waste of taxpayers’ money if the stadium is not secured properly.

“The stadium has now become dilapidated and vandalized under the watch of the ANC. Leaving the community without proper sports and recreational facilities. The whole community has been affected by the destruction of the stadium.

“Pensioners used to do their daily exercises there. Vendors who used to sell their products at the stadium during sporting events have now been denied an income,”
Morake said.

Morake went further to state that the stadium had now become a criminal hideout as youths no longer have a place for recreation and sports anymore.

The DA said it will be issuing a petition in the municipal council and in the provincial legislature to determine who the contractors were.

“The DA will be submitting questions in the municipal council and in the provincial legislature to determine who the contractors were that was appointed to build and provide security at the stadium, why these contractors were not able to do the job effectively the first time, and what amounts will be required to repair the infrastructure at this stadium which is in an advanced state of decay.

“We want to give our community a place where they can get together, a place where the youth can develop and stay healthy and place which we as a community can be proud of and this can only happen if we vote for a party get things done,” the statement reads.
