DA Demands Investigation Into Suspicious SAPS Health Services Tender

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called for an immediate investigation into the awarding of a R360 million South African Police Service (SAPS) health services tender.

The party is requested citing concerns over possible conflicts of interest and suspicious ties.

The controversy centers on the involvement of former SAPS official, Petunia Lenono, whose actions in the tender process have raised significant questions.

Concerns Over Lenono’s Role In Tender Process

The DA alleges that Lenono, a former brigadier and member of the bid evaluation committee, had a conflict of interest in recommending the award of the tender to Medicare24 Tshwane.

Lenono reportedly resigned from SAPS just six days after the tender was granted, prompting questions about the timing of her departure.

Furthermore, the DA claims that Lenono was assigned a Medicare24 email address, despite her statements denying any role at the company.

“The circumstances surrounding Lenono’s involvement in this tender are highly suspicious, and we believe that a full investigation is necessary to determine whether her actions influenced the award process,” said a DA representative.

The party has also raised concerns about Lenono’s prior connection to Vusimusi Cat Matlala, the former director of Medicare24, whose companies have been previously scrutinized by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and the Hawks.

Links To Vusimusi Cat Matlala And Previous Investigations

Matlala’s companies have been the subject of several investigations, however, the DA insists that the potential connection between him and Lenono warrants urgent scrutiny.

“If it is found that Lenono had any prior private communication or involvement with Matlala or his entities before the award of the tender, SAPS must launch a full investigation into the entire bidding process,” the DA stated.

The party has vowed to pose parliamentary questions to uncover the extent of Lenono’s involvement in the tender process.

They aim to determine whether there was any prior contact between Lenono and Matlala before the contract was awarded.

DA Calls for Independent Audit And Full Disclosure

The DA is seeks for an independent audit focusing specifically on Lenono’s role and any possible ties to Matlala.

Additionally, the party plans to file a Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) request to access the full bid documents in order to conduct a comprehensive review of the procurement process.

According to the party, “If any irregularities are found, SAPS must conduct a complete audit of its bid evaluation procedures to restore public trust and ensure that the procurement process is transparent and fair.”
