DA Calls For Mapisa-Nqakula To Step Down Amid Corruption Allegations

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has recently made a strong call for the Speaker of the National Assembly, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, to step down from her position. This comes after reports emerged that her house in Bruma, Johannesburg was raided by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in connection with corruption allegations she is currently facing.
Mapisa-Nqakula is facing serious allegations of corruption, specifically related to her tenure as Minister of Defence. It is alleged that she had received and solicited at least R2.3 million in cash from a former military contractor. Such allegations of corruption are deeply concerning, especially when they involve a high-ranking government official.

As the head of the legislature in South Africa, the Speaker holds a position of great responsibility. The rules of parliament explicitly state that the Speaker should “uphold the dignity and good name of the house.”
However, having one’s home raided due to corruption allegations of this nature goes against the very essence of this requirement. To maintain public trust in the institution, it is crucial that Mapisa-Nqakula steps down from her position. She cannot be entrusted with such a high office when facing such serious allegations.
It is imperative that those in positions of power demonstrate the highest standards of integrity and accountability.
The Speaker is expected to lead by example and ensure that both members of the executive and parliament adhere to their oath of office. Unfortunately, the severity of the allegations against Mapisa-Nqakula raises significant doubts about her ability to fulfil this crucial role.

The DA believes that the Speaker’s continued presence in office undermines the integrity of the legislative institution. It is now the responsibility of Parliament and the Ethics Committee to swiftly and thoroughly investigate these allegations. The investigation must be carried out with the utmost urgency and efficiency to ensure that justice is served.
The DA is committed to taking further steps on this issue and will announce its course of action in due course. It is essential that this matter is handled promptly and transparently to restore faith in the integrity of South Africa’s legislative system.
