Cyril Ramaphosa Meets Anti-Illegal Immigration Leaders Ahead Of Nationwide Protests

President Cyril Ramaphosa held an urgent meeting with leaders of the anti-illegal immigration movement on Monday, ahead of demonstrations planned across South Africa on 30 June. During the meeting, he urged organisers to ensure that all protests remain peaceful and lawful.

The discussions took place as several groups prepared for nationwide demonstrations calling for stricter action against undocumented foreign nationals. Government has also reiterated that the enforcement of immigration laws remains its responsibility.

Cyril Ramaphosa Calls For Peaceful Anti-Illegal Immigration Protests

Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya confirmed that Ramaphosa met with Insizwa Nobunsiza leaders Ngizwe Mchunu and Nkosikhona Ndabandaba before Tuesday’s planned protests.

According to Magwenya, the President reminded the group’s leadership that the constitutional right to protest comes with the responsibility to obey the law.

“The president emphasised to both of them that the right to protest is coupled with the responsibility to observe the law and to protest peacefully,” Magwenya said.

Government Says Migration Laws Must Be Enforced By The State

Ramaphosa also reaffirmed that the state alone is responsible for implementing and enforcing South Africa’s immigration laws.

Magwenya said government continues to deal with migration-related challenges through the appropriate legal processes.

“The government is addressing the issue of migration and remains the sole authority responsible for the enforcement of migration laws,” Magwenya said.

Anti-Illegal Immigration Protests Expected Across South Africa

The meeting took place just hours before demonstrations expected in several parts of the country. Organisers have called for tougher measures against undocumented foreign nationals.

Government has repeatedly acknowledged public concerns surrounding illegal immigration. However, it has warned that violence, intimidation and acts of vigilantism will not be tolerated, stressing that all protests must remain within the confines of the law.
